Amethyst for February!

Janice Stiles

Amethyst, the birthstone for February, is prized for its purple color, ranging from pale lavender to deep, royal violet. A variety of quartz, its color comes from trace amounts of iron in the crystal. Over time, natural radiation alters the iron – this is nature practicing slow, patient magic.

For centuries, amethyst was considered as valuable as ruby or emerald. It has long been connected with royals, bishops, and spiritual leaders. A wonderful example of the deep violet stone is the sterling wire-wrapped pendant above – truly suitable for royalty.

And a fun little bit of lore: the name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning “not drunk.” The ancient Greeks believed it protected against intoxication - so goblets were sometimes carved from it!

Reticulation gives these amethyst-enhanced earrings a touch of casualness, making them perfect for both dressy and informal occasions. Their crisp form, paired with a softly textured surface, creates a timeless appeal for all ages. Try pairing them with the sterling wrapped pendant for a cohesive but not matchy-matchy look.

Amethyst has long been associated with clarity of mind, protection, inner calm, intuition, and wisdom. Even if you’re not drawn to crystal meanings, many people find the color alone soothing. There’s something inherently contemplative about purple, and this simple, soft lavender,10mm faceted stone is a perfect example. Amethyst is a timeless stone of quiet beauty and depth.
