Emerald

Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May, and has been called the “jewel of kings”. This amazing green stone is part of the “big four”, which also includes diamonds, rubies and sapphires. Clarity is very important when evaluating emeralds, as many, even very high-quality stones, have inclusions. Inclusions are a material that is trapped inside of another mineral while that mineral forms. Emeralds often receive treatments and enhancements, as do many gemstones. Most of these are acceptable industry practices, although they should be disclosed to the buyer.

Aurum Emerald

The ultimate gift for a May birthday or for the person in your life (maybe yourself!) who most deserves to feel the gravity of the "jewel of kings," this aurum accent and emerald pendulum is a statement piece with all manner of flair! The 5.2-carat lab emerald is the signature piece for the Hidden in the Hills 2021 studio tour. Created from reticulated sterling silver--a torch process guaranteeing one-of-a-kind artistry--with both 22 karat gold and 14 karat gold fill accents, the emerald is the pendulum that is designed to move within the piece.

Real Emeralds

I am often asked about gemstone facts and while I’m no expert, I do try to research the stones I use. For example: Is a lab created emerald a “real” emerald? The answer is yes, it is real, but it is not a “natural” emerald. Both natural and lab created emeralds are expensive, with the natural stone costing multiple times the price of a lab created stone. Lab created emeralds are among the most expensive of lab created gemstones and they have exactly the same chemical, physical and optical properties as naturally occurring emeralds. Lab emeralds make amazing jewelry; it’s just important to disclose that information to the buyer.

While cleaning an emerald yourself is certainly possible, I always recommend taking the stones to a reputable jeweler. Since emeralds are quite valuable, it’s worth the bit of money to do so. Even though emeralds are 7.5 to 8.0 on the Mohs hardness scale, that can be deceptive due to the inclusions in the stone that could cause it to fracture depending on the cleaning method used. If you want to clean your emerald yourself, the tried & true warm soapy water with a soft brush is the best.
