Birthstone Jewelry Feature: July Rubies

Janice Stiles

Rubies! One of the “big four” gemstones, which also include diamonds, sapphires and emeralds, rubies are July's birthstone, and a favorite gemstone of mine!

Ruby

This is my birthstone and it is amazing. I’ve seen it in light red to almost blood-red colors.

A ruby is also very hard, a 9 on the Mohs hardness scales, making it great for everyday wear. Rubies were first mined in India, but now deposits have been found in Pakistan, Southeast Asia and Africa, among other locations. Fine quality natural rubies are some of the most expensive gemstones, but rubies are also given more treatments than almost any other gemstone. Prices can be as inexpensive as $10 or up to $12,000 per carat, depending on color, imperfections and impurities.

A ruby labeled “genuine” is a naturally occurring stone that has likely had a heat treatment. This is acceptable, but should always be disclosed to the buyer. Lab rubies possess the same chemical and physical characteristics as natural rubies, but without the imperfections. They can cost around $30 per carat. Lab rubies are beautiful stones, but should never be sold as “natural."

You can't go wrong with a pair of ruby earrings. Whether you're purchasing a special gift for a July birthday or just want to embrace the fiery energy of this fine art jewelry, bring a "big four" gemstone home with you and enjoy being seen, recognized, and taken seriously!
