Amethyst - The Birthstone of February

Janice Stiles

The often-considered birthstone for February is Amethyst. a popular and valuable semi-precious gemstone. It ranges in color from light lilac to deep violet and is valued for its distinctive hue. The best quality Amethyst has a deep, rich color and is transparent to translucent. Amethyst has been used in jewelry and ornamental objects for thousands of years. As a hard and durable stone, it is suitable for use in a variety of jewelry applications.

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that Amethyst had protective powers and could ward off drunkenness. I have read that it is often associated with spirituality and healing, particularly to calm the mind and relieve stress.

Amethyst can be found in many locations worldwide, including Brazil, Uruguay, and Africa. Surprisingly, it is also mined here in Arizona in the isolated area of Four Peaks located 40 miles from Phoenix in the Mazatzal Mountains. The gems are in such a remote location that the mine is believed to be the only precious stone mine in the United States that requires a helicopter to transport supplies in and take mined minerals out.
